Del Mar Paddock Sale Offers Graded Winners

Heir Kitty is one of the graded stakes winners being offered in the Paddock Sale at Del Mar on July 20.
Thirty-nine horses of racing age, including 15 2-year-olds, have been cataloged for the third annual Paddock Sale at Del Mar of Race Ready Horses. Graded winners Heir Kitty, Ciao Bella Luna, and Handsome Mike are among the older horses being offered.
Barretts Sales & Racing conducts the sale, which will be held in the Del Mar paddock July 20 shortly after the final race Sunday afternoon and streamed live at BloodHorse.com/Barretts. The sale was created in 2012 as a way to augment Del Mar's Ship & Win program to bring more horses into the Southern California circuit.
Not all horses in the paddock sale are eligible for the Ship & Win bonuses. However, those that are can earn the new owners $1,000 when those horses run at Del Mar plus an additional 33.3% (excluding stakes races) on top of any purse money won in that first start.
Steven Venosa's SGV Thoroughbreds has consigned Heir Kitty to the sale as agent for David A. Bersen and Paul Makin. A 4-year-old daughter of Wildcat Heir —Be Silver, by Silver Buck, Heir Kitty won the La Brea Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park last December, has placed in three other graded stakes, and has earned $421,272.
Venosa's consignment also includes Ciao Bella Luna, who has been racing for the Rockingham Ranch. By Tribal Rule—Shadow of the Moon, by Conquistador Cielo, the 4-year-old filly won the 2013 Beaumont Stakes (gr. II) at Keeneland and the 2014 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes at Santa Anita. She has earned $284,110.
Bruno DeBerdt's Excel Bloodstock offers Handsome Mike, raced by Reddam Racing. An earner of $971,413, Handsome Mike is a 5-year-old horse by Scat Daddy —Classic Strike, by Smart Strike . He won the 2012 Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) and 2013 Commonwealth Stakes (gr. III), and has placed in five other graded stakes, including two this year.
Sushi Empire has been entered in both the sale and the July 19 San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT) at Del Mar. Consigned by Sweezey and Partners, the 3-year-old daughter of Empire Maker—Dowell House, by Danzig, won this year's Blue Norther Stakes at Santa Anita and finished third in last year's Miesque Stakes (gr. IIIT).
The 15 2-year-olds include offspring by such stallions as Blame , Bluegrass Cat , Elusive Quality , Harlan's Holiday, Henny Hughes, Medaglia d'Oro , and Two Step Salsa .
Barretts announced that horses are available for inspection at Del Mar beginning July 18 during non-training hours in the east side of Barn Y, which is the barn closest to the paddock.
In conjunction with the sale, the Thoroughbred Owners of California will sponsor a new owner seminar and sale preview July 20 in the Veranda Café near the paddock at 9 a.m.
