Carson City Colt Works In :10 1/5 For OBS March Auction

A Carson City colt zipped an eighth of a mile in :10 1/5 seconds, turning in the fastest work for that distance Sunday during the under tack show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March select juvenile auction. A large crowd turned out on an unseasonably hot morning in Central Florida for the final session of workouts before the sale. Among those watching the action were Florida horseman J.B. McKathan, New Jersey bloodstock agent Buzz Chace, and Central Kentucky bloodstock agent Dan Kenny, whose clients include Eugene Melnyk. Trainer Akiko McVarish was on hand with a Japanese group.

"I see a lot of familiar faces on the grounds," said consignor Murray Smith. "I feel like this will a little bit more even market. I think more horses will be sold. There are more players here in the mid-range. For $100,000 to $200,000 horses, I think there will be a stronger market than there was (in South Florida) earlier this year."

The fast-working Carson City colt was produced from the 11-year-old Topsider mare Creeksider, who is a half-sister to English champion Henbit. Consigned by Carl Bowling's Straightaway Farm, the colt was purchased for $45,000 by W.D. North, agent, at the 2001 Keeneland September yearling sale. The colt worked an eighth in :10 2/5 on March 11.

Lake Kitty, a Forest Wildcat colt, led all workers at a quarter of a mile with a clocking of :21 2/5. His dam, the 13-year-old Hoist the Silver mare I Owe Silver, is a half-sister to South American stakes winner Fighting Sheri. Bred in Kentucky, Lake Kitty has not been offered previously at public auction. The colt worked an eighth in :10 2/5 on March 11.

Escrow Advantage, a colt by Tactical Advantage, posted the quickest time at three furlongs, covering the distance in :34. The clocking was the fastest recorded during all four sessions of the pre-sale workouts. Consigned by Ricky Leppala, the colt was produced from the 9-year-old Chief's Crown mare Caveat Apt. Leppala purchased Escrow Advantage at the 2001 OBS August yearling sale for $16,000. The colt worked a quarter in :21 4/5 on March 11.

The OBS March sale will be conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday, with sessions beginning at 11 a.m (EST) each day.
