Trading was robust at the second session of the Tattersalls July sale July 10 as both total revenue and median rose by double-digit percentage points while 95% of the horses offered were sold.
New Street, a 3-year-old son of Acclamation (GB), brought the day's highest price of 185,000 guineas ($333,000 in United States funds) from agent Bobby O'Ryan, who was bidding on behalf of owner James Smith and trainer Jim Best.
The purchase price help drive total sales to 2,834,200 guineas ($5,101,560), a rise of 25% from last year's corresponding session. The day's median price rose 11% to 10,000 guineas ($18,000) but the average price slipped 2% to 17,714 guineas ($31,885).
New Street, the sale's top price through two days of the three-day auction, has a 2-2-1 record from seven starts for trainer Richard Fahey, including a last-out win at Haydock June 21. He was purchased as a jumping prospect.
"He's a lovely horse whom I know well," O'Ryan said about the colt, who is out of winning Rainbow Quest mare New Deal and was offered in Fahey's Musley Bank Stables consignment. "He's a sound, lovely type. Everything about him is right. I hope he can go on and do what we want."
David Redvers had the day's second-highest price of 145,000 guineas ($261,000) to acquire Irish group III winner Brendan Brackan
for Sheikh Fahad Al Thani.
A 5-year-old son of Big Bad Bob—Abeyr, by Unfuwain, has a 4-4-2 record from 19 starts, including last year's win in the Solonaway Stakes (Ire-III) at the Curragh. He is winless in five starts this season for trainer Ger Lyons who offered him under his Glenburnie Stables banner. But he has placed in three group races including the Al Maktoum Challenge (UAE-II) in January at Meydan.
Brendan Brackan is set to return to Ireland to Lyon's Glenburnie Stables.
"Ger was keen to keep the horse," Redvers said. "Sheikh Fahad can see the value in buying a horse in training.
"Brendan Brackan is a tough, sound, consistent horse who runs at a high level. It did not appear that he suited Dubai in the winter, but a return trip might be considered in future."
The final session of the Tattersalls July sale is set for July 11.
