Paloma Parilla and Cojet to Skip Rebel Stakes; Ocean Sound to Start
Paloma Parilla and Cojet will both miss their anticipated starts in the March 23 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Paloma Parilla, who won his division of the split Southwest Stakes, developed a quarter crack and Cojet's trainer Robert Holthus was not pleased with Cojet's Friday morning work."We found a quarter crack in Paloma Parilla's left front," trainer Larry Robideaux Jr. said. "It's nothing serious, but there's no point taking the chance. I don't want to just patch him to get him to the race. I want to heal him."Paloma Parilla missed a week of training following the Southwest victory, but was back on track Thursday and will now be pointed toward the $75,000 Northern Spur Stakes (Oaklawn, April 10) or the $100,000 Grand Prairie Turf Challenge (April 6, Lone Star Park).Cojet, meanwhile, went too fast for Holthus' liking in Friday's five-furlong work."I didn't like his work Friday morning," Holthus said Saturday. "He went much too fast (:33 4/5) early, he never relaxed, and he didn't finish well. We'll give some time off, and then look for a sprint for him."Calvin Borel was to ride Cojet in the Rebel, but quickly picked up the mount on Ocean Sound for the 1 1/16-mile race. Ocean Sound finished fourth in Came Home's San Rafael Stakes (gr. II) win for trainer James Cassidy.Others expected for the Southwest include a trio from trainer Steve Asmussen (Private Emblem, Interminable Gold, and Windward Passage), Bay Monster, Dusty Spike, Jeremiah Jack and Cope With An Image. The Rebel is the final local prep for the $500,000 Arkansas Derby (gr. II, April 13).
