"He's leavin' town," was all Gary Stevens' agent Brian Beach told Santa Anita stakes coordinator Rick Hammerle Wednesday afternoon, in regard to Sunday Break's status is Sunday's San Felipe Stakes.
Trainer Neil Drysdale was at a trainer's meeting at Santa Anita and was not available to confirm just where the son of Forty Niner will be heading. "He's definitely not running in the San Felipe," Beach said. "Neil already released us, and Gary will ride Puerto Banus instead. All I know is that Neil is waiting to hear from the owners to discuss other options, but he'll likely be heading East."
Puerto Banus, trained by Bob Baffert, finished second in the Sham Stakes to USS Tinosa in his last start. Sunday Break has won his last two starts, and is still looking to make his stakes debut. With Sunday Break out, Siphonic is expected to go off as the overwhelming favorite in the San Felipe.
