Three juveniles from the same consignment sped a furlong in :09 4/5 , the fastest time at the under tack preview for the Barretts Sales & Racing May sale of 2-year-olds in training May 9. All three, a colt and two fillies, hail from John Brocklebank's TIP Sales.
Times were consistent throughout the three sets of previews, which took place from 10 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. PDT, with two renovation breaks at the Barretts racetrack at Fairplex Park in Pomona, Calif. One of the top clockings came from each of the sets.
The first one, hip #20, is a daughter of Majesticperfection —Speed Has Value, by Value Plus. The filly was a $17,000 buy-back at the 2013 Keeneland fall yearling sale. She is out of a half sister to multiple grade III winner Lantana Mob .
The colt, hip #108, previewed in the second set. He sold for $15,000 at last year's Barretts yearling sale and is a son of Delineator—Marquet Formula, by Marquetry. The second dam, Spite and Malice, won several stakes at Emerald Downs.
TIP Sales also sent out hip #123 to breeze an eighth in :09 4/5 in the third set. Named Shh She's Ours, she is a daughter of Tiz Wonderful —Our Secret, by Forestry, and sold for $35,000 at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale. Second dam Top Secret earned $997,647 while winning several graded stakes.
"We had a good turnout of prospective buyers in perfect weather," said Kim Lloyd, Barretts' general manager. "This is very similar to our other May sales. Horses have come out of here and performed well, and we expect that again. People need horses, and many of the local horsemen are looking to restock their barns."
Lloyd noted that he has seen some Japanese interest as well as some prospective buyers from Korea.
While most of the youngsters breezed a furlong, several previewed a quarter mile. Of those, hip #70 from Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables consignment had the best time of :20 4/5. The filly is a daughter of Majesticperfection out of the Gone West mare Ennui. The dam is out of millionaire Urbane and a half sister to major winners Suave and Worldly.
The sale, to be held Monday, May 12 beginning at 2 p.m. PDT at the Hinds Pavilion, has cataloged 129 horses plus another 14 in the supplementary catalog. It includes one 2-year-old who has already started, Global Hart. She ran second in a maiden race at Golden Gate Fields April 25. Mary Knight is selling the daughter of Globalize—Sarah's Hart, by In Excess, for the Victory Rose Partnership.
