Jockey Corey Nakatani was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for X-rays Saturday after his mount, Candace in Paris, clipped heels with Elderberry turning into the stretch and fell. Nakatani suffered a fractured left clavicle in the spill. Candace in Paris, a 3-year-old filly trained by Simon Bray for owner Madeleine Paulson, was euthanized after sustaining a broken shoulder. Nakatani is expected to be sidelined for up to five weeks.
Candace in Paris was the 2-5 favorite in the race, the $76, 175 Finlandia Cup Handicap. Elderberry, a 19-1 longshot ridden by Luis Jauregui, finished second but was disqualified and placed eighth by the stewards. Miss Pixie (13-1) won the race.
Nakatani was replaced by Laffit Pincay Jr. aboard General Challenge in Del Mar’s feature race Saturday, the $1-million Pacific Classic (gr. I). General Challenge finished fourth as the odds-on favorite.
