The purse for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I), Europe's premier middle-distance race, has been raised to €5 million ($6,926,248 in United States funds) for 2014.

The increase marks a 4.2% rise from last year's €4.8 million purse, and further cements the event as the world's richest flat race on turf. The Arc is annually staged the first Sunday in October at Longchamp.

In 2008, France Galop, organizer of the race, and the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club inked a partnership agreement for the 2,400-meter (about 1 1/2-mile) race. Since then, subsequent agreements between the two ensure sponsorship of the race until 2022.

Last year, the Arc was won in stunning fashion by Treve, a filly owned by Qatari Sheikh Joaan Al Thani's Al Shaqab Racing.
