Penny Marie beat Twin Set by a nose Thursday in the $82,450 Winter Solstice Handicap to give Kent Desormeaux his fourth win of the day at Santa Anita. Robert Hess Jr.-trained Penny Marie covered 6 1/2 furlongs on the firm downhill turf course in 1:13.20 and paid $14.40, $6.80, and $5.20. Twin Set returned $8.20 and $5.20, and La Ronge paid $6.20 after third-place finisher Queen of Wilshire was disqualified for interference in the stretch run. Kentucky-bred Penny Marie's seventh win in 14 starts increases her career earnings to $330,130. Albert G. Clay bred Penny Marie (Sky Classic--Aspenglo, by Raise a Native) in Kentucky. Desormeaux also won the second race on Yet Anothernatalie ($2.80), the third atop Staging Post ($7.40), and the sixth on The Buggy Whip ($6.80). (Charts, Equibase)
