'Hot Knee' Sidelines Pelirrojo
Trainer John Sadler said San Rafael Stakes fifth-place finisher Pelirrojo will miss two to three months of training after coming out of the race with a "hot knee," rendering the 3-year-old son of Flying Continental off the Kentucky Derby trail."X-rays are OK, but he'll probably go to the ranch for two or three months," the conditioner said.Granja Vista Del Rio Stable's homebred Pelirrojo has won two of four career starts.In other West Coast Triple Crown developments, trainer Bob Baffert has decided on Saturday's El Camino Real Derby for Danthebluegrassman's next start."He likes it up there," said Baffert of the Pioneering colt who has already won the Gold Rush Stakes and the Golden Gate Derby at Golden Gate Fields. February Storm has finished second on two occasions, including his most recent start in a 1 1/8-mile maiden race at Santa Anita last month. Martin Pedroza will ride February Storm.Jeff Mullins-trained Captain Squire, meanwhile, has failed to win on only one occasion, that coming in his career debut in a November maiden claiming race at Hollywood Park. He rebounded from a sixth-place performance in that sprint to win a 1 1/16-mile maiden claimer in December, which he followed with a claiming race win at one mile and the listed Turf Paradise Derby. Donald Mills trains the bay Florida-bred son of Flying Chevron, who worked four furlongs in :47 2/5 at Santa Anita Monday.Meanwhile, several horses pointing for the San Felipe were in action Wednesday morning. Baffert sent out Mountain Rage and Puerto Banus for six-furlong works at Santa Anita, with the former clocked in 1:11 4/5 and the latter in 1:12. Recent allowance winner Sunday Break worked the same distance in 1:13 3/5 at Hollywood Park for trainer Neil Drysdale, and Siphonic completed a seven-furlong work at the same track.Mayakovsky, preparing for the March 16 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct, put in a seven-furlong work at Santa Anita for trainer Patrick Biancone.
