Siphonic Impresses in San Felipe Work

By Margaret RansomAmerman Racing Stable's Siphonic, gearing up for his next start in the March 17 San Felipe S. (gr. II) at Santa Anita, drilled an impressive seven furlongs in 1:24 2/5 over a fast main track at Hollywood Park on Wednesday. Clockers timed the Kentucky-bred son of Siphon in splits of :36 4/5 and 1:00 2/5, and had him galloping out in 1:38 2/5 for the mile. Hall of Famer Chris McCarron was in the irons for trainer David Hofmans, substituting for regular rider Jerry Bailey, who will be in town for the San Felipe.
Also on the Wednesday morning worktab was Koji Maeda's Japanese-bred Sunday Break, who logged six furlongs in 1:13 3/5. The Neil Drysdale-trained son of Forty Niner, who will make his stakes debut in the San Felipe, won a 1 1/16-mile allowance event by two lengths in his last start over Santa Anita's main track and will be looking for his third consecutive win.
Other notable names expected to start in the 1 1/16-mile San Felipe are Mountain Rage, Puerto Banus and U S S Tinosa.
