Racing Caucus Plans First Meeting of 2002

The congressional caucus for the horse racing industry was scheduled to hold its first meeting of the year March 6 in Washington, D.C. Among the issues on the table is the 2001 Farm Bill, which was in conference committee as of March 4.

Lobbyists and Greg Avioli, deputy commissioner of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, are scheduled to meet with members of the conference committee. The House version of the bill includes language that recognizes horses as livestock, but the Senate version does not.

Avioli also was expected to meet with other legislators to discuss proposed legislation that would eliminate the withholding tax on winnings from common-pooled international wagers.
