CANTER, an online service that helps transition racehorses into second careers, announced March 21 that its newly established Texas operation successfully moved six ex-runners in the first week.

Volunteers for the organization, the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses, have been visiting tracks to offer free sales listings to Texas trainers looking to move horses into a new career, according to a release. The listings include a photo, description, and contact information.

"We sold our first horse through the free listing service in three days after we started posting horses for sale on the CANTER-Texas website," said Laura Holmes, executive director of the San Antonio-based service. "There has been very positive feedback from trainers and buyers who are looking forward to owning an ex-racehorse. We are very excited to be able to provide this program to the Texas racing industry and help find new careers for these talented and versatile horses."

CANTER-Texas volunteers will be serving racetracks in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Horses listed for sale are available to the general public on www.canterusa.org/texas.

CANTER is a fully-credited 501(c)(3) organization as designated by the IRS dedicated to helping Thoroughbred racehorses find new careers after completing their racing careers. Nationwide, the free program has helped over 14,000 horses transition from racing since its inception in 1997.
