Breeders' Cup Ltd. announced March 14 that its director of racing and nominations, Joshua Christian, will be on assignment in Europe for an extended recruitment effort between April and October this year.

Christian's primary responsibilities will be personal communication with owners and trainers regarding participation in the Breeders' Cup World Championships and to solidify European stallion nominations to the international program.

By placing a full-time Breeders' Cup staff member on location in Europe, Breeders' Cup will have direct access to championship-caliber horses and their connections, according to a press release from the Lexington-based organization. In addition, Breeders' Cup will have a presence at all major sales and will be able to further promote the Breeders' Cup Challenge series at locations in England, Ireland, France, and Germany, the Breeders' Cup said.

"We believe that having Josh on-site for six months of the year demonstrates our commitment to international racing and nominations," said Breeders' Cup president Craig Fravel. "Beyond the benefit of having a presence at major racing meets, having a full-time staff member in Europe gives us a greater understanding of the international racing and sales calendar and the needs and concerns of our constituents."

"I am honored to be given this opportunity to foster the relationships we've developed with members of the European breeding and racing community over the years and very much look forward to building strong new connections as well," Christian said. "I'm looking forward to working with everyone in Europe and providing feedback to the home team looking ahead to the 2014 Breeders' Cup and beyond."

Fravel, executive vice president Bob Elliston, and senior vice president of racing and nomination Dora Delgado will be leading the efforts in the U.S. and Canada to promote the BC Challenge Series, World Championships, and breeder participation through nominations.

In addition to Christian's presence in Europe, the organization will also continue its partnership with Ed Sackville as special advisor regarding European bloodstock and will continue to retain the services of the International Racing Bureau throughout the year for overseas logistics and assistance.
