Seattle Slew successfully underwent surgery Saturday morning to fuse the joint between two vertebrae in his neck.

"Surgery, anesthesia, and his recovery went well," said Three Chimneys veterinarian Dr. Jim Morehead. "Less than three hours after surgery, Tom Wade [his groom] led Slew from the surgery barn to the hospital barn. Currently, he's standing comfortably and eating hay and everything seems to be positive at this point in his recovery."

Seattle Slew will remain at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington for up to 10 days before returning to his home at Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky. The 28-year-old stallion is the only living Triple Crown winner and oldest living Kentucky Derby winner.

"We're taking everything one step at a time," said Mickey Taylor, syndicate manager of the horse and, with his wife Karen, one of the original owners of the only undefeated Triple Crown winner in history. "As with any surgery and recuperation, there are many hurdles. But he's a very intelligent and resilient horse, and I learned a long time ago to never, ever be surprised by what he can do."
