Marylou Whitney Stable's Governor Hickel worked five furlongs at Gulfstream Park Saturday in preparation for the $150,000 Swale Stakes (gr. III) on the Florida Derby (gr. I) undercard. The Nick Zito-trained son of Gulch completed the breeze in 1:01 2/5.
Gary Stevens will pilot Governor Hickel in the Swale, as well as the Zito-trained High Star in the Florida Derby.
Governor Hickel earned his first win in a one-mile at Churchill Downs last fall in his fifth career start. He returned from a brief freshening to place fourth in a 1 1/16-mile Gulfstream Park allowance race Jan. 9 won by Stephentown before winning a Jan. 25 allowance race at the Swale distance.
Governor Hickel is out of the unraced Relaunch mare Existentialist. His second dam, Change Water (by Swaps), also produced Fall Aspen, the dam of Preakness (gr. I) winner Timber Country, Grand Prix de Paris (Fr-I) winner Fort Wood, Bianconi, Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Prince of Thieves, and Colorado Dancer, herself the dam of four-time group I winner Dubai Millennium (by Seeking the Gold).
Also working at Gulfstream Saturday was Remsen Stakes (gr. II) winner Saarland. The son of Unbridled went five furlongs in 1:02 3/5, breezing.
