With Godolphin sending out six of the eight starters, Thursday's UAE 2,000 Guineas at Nad al Sheba was won by Norfolk Stakes winner Essence of Dubai, who scored by a nose over another Godolphin colt, the English-bred Firebreak.

American-bred State City finished third, 2 1/4 lengths behind the runner-up. Godolphin's Janadel, who finished fourth in last fall's Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs, was fifth, behind Irish-bred Henri Lebasque in fourth.

Essence of Dubai, who was ridden by Frankie Dettori, was making his first start since his dismal showing in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Firebreak, who is not nominated to the Triple Crown, had won four of his six career starts, but had never run farther than 6 furlongs. Among his victories was the group II Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury and the group III Prix de Cabourg at Deauville.

The running time for the mile was 1:36 3/5.

Essence of Dubai is a son of Pulpit, who also has Derby contenders Nokoma and Clergy. His dam is Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Epitome. Essence of Dubai, bred by Jonabell Farm, was purchased at the Keeneland September yearling sale for $2.3 million
