Stakes winner Bagshot, who placed in the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) and Strub Stakes (gr. II) in consecutive starts, has been retired from racing with earnings of $729,104 and will enter stud at Dr. Jack Root's Oakhurst Farm in Newberg, Ore.

Bagshot raced as a homebred for John Toffan and Trudy McCaffery, winning four races and placing in 13 others from 31 starts while competing solely at the three major Southern California tracks. He captured the Wells Fargo Bank California Cup Classic at Santa Anita and the I'm Smokin Stakes at Del Mar and placed in nine added-money races. In the $1-million Big 'Cap in 1998, his effort fell only a half-length short. Bagshot (Smokester--Norrsken, by Northern Jove) stands for $1,500 live foal.
