2013 New Mexico Champions Announced

The New Mexico Horse Breeders' Association honored its 2013 Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse champions Jan. 30 during the Zia Awards Banquet at the Marriott Uptown Hotel in Albuquerque.

During the banquet, emceed by Chris Kotulak, a total of 21 awards were presented. Breeders Mike H. Carson and Bill D. Carson were honored with the 2013 Julep Cup from The Blood-Horse magazine. The Carsons bred and raced 2013 New Mexico-bred champion Thoroughbreds Mr. Wizard and Lady Genius.

Also, a Distinguished Service Award was presented to Harold Payne of El Paso, Texas. In 2013, Payne retired after a successful career in the racing industry that included a long stint as general manager of Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino in southern New Mexico.

2013 New Mexico-bred Thoroughbred champions:

2-year-old colt or gelding: Reaper

2-year-old filly: Lady Genius

3-year-old colt or gelding:
Hush's Storm

3-year-old filly: Way To Go Gerda

Older horse or gelding:
Mr. Wizard

Older mare:
Rose's Desert

Broodmare:
Miss Einstein

Stallion: Desert God

Freshman Stallion: Diabolical
