Mizzen Mast (4) pulls away to defeat Giant Gentleman in the Strub Stakes.
Mizzen Mast, the Strub Stakes (gr. II) winner and likely favorite for Saturday's $1 million Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I), will miss the race due to a quarter crack, trainer Bobby Frankel said Sunday morning.
Frankel said he would now likely enter Stronach Stable's Milwaukee Brew in Mizzen Mast's place. Milwaukee Brew and fellow Stronach runner Euchre will be a coupled entry in the Big 'Cap.
Weights for the 1 1/4-mile race are due Sunday afternoon. The post-position draw is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Santa Anita lists the following horses, with riders, as probable for the race: Cagney, Mike Smith; Dig For It, no rider; Euchre, Garrett Gomez; Fancy As, Gary Stevens; Freedom Crest, Corey Nakatani; Futural, Chris McCarron; Giant Gentleman, Alex Solis; Irisheyesareflying, David Flores; Kudos, Eddie Delahoussaye; Last Parade, no rider, and Milwaukee Brew, Kent Desormeaux. Possible are Seinne, with Victor Espinoza in the irons, and Western Pride, no rider.
