Bevo, who on Wednesday at Saratoga completed his second bullet work in less than a week, drew post position five for Saturday’s $200,000 King’s Bishop Stakes (gr. I), in which he will face the Todd Pletcher-trained duo of More Than Ready and Left Bank.
Bevo drilled four furlongs in :46.27, handily, Wednesday on the heels of a five-furlong
work in :59.85, handily, on Friday.
The Bill Badgett trainee won a Belmont allowance race against older horses in his first race of the year before finishing a well-beaten second to Trippi in the Riva Ridge (gr. II) in June. Bevo was sidelined after the Riva Ridge with a foot abcess.
“When he came out of his last race his foot looked pretty bad,” said Badgett. “We had to give him a little time off and get him healed properly.”
“He breezed a little faster than I had wanted him to, but he did it the way,” Badgett said of his Wednesday work, the quickest of 43 at the distance on the day. “He’s doing well and we’re ready to go ahead with him.”
More Than Ready will race without blinkers when he cuts back in distance for the seven-furlong King’s Bishop. More Than Ready’s only win on the year, a dead heat win in the Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) in January, came at the King’s Bishop distance, but since then More Than Ready has raced exclusively in races longer than a mile.
“I’m not sure if he’s better sprinting or at middle distances,” Pletcher said. “I think Saturday will let us know a lot about where we should go from here. If he should run well, the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) is certainly a possibility.”
The field of six 3-year-olds for the King’s Bishop -- with jockeys, weights, and morning-line odds -- will consist of:
1—Wake At Noon, Jorge Chavez, 119, 8-1
2—Millencolin, Shane Sellers, 121, 12-1
3—Left Bank, Jerry Bailey, 116, 9-5
4—More Than Ready, Pat Day, 124, 7-5
5—Bevo, Richard Migliore, 121, 5-1
6—Valiant Halory, Edgar Prado, 114, 6-1
