Michael Tabor's Nokoma, runner-up in the Remsen Stakes to Saarland, will attempt to rebound from a disappointing effort in the Holy Bull Stakes when he takes on 12 opponents in a mile and 70-yard allowance race at Gulfstream Saturday.
Nokoma, who finished fourth, beaten 12 lengths, in the Holy Bull, will face a formidable foe in Monthir, who is coming off a nose defeat in the 7-furlong Hutcheson Stakes. Also entered are the Nick Zito pair of Straight Gin, winner of a 1 1/16-mile maiden race in his last start, and Inaugural Address, third in a 1/16-mile allowance race. Both colts are owned by Marylou Whitney. Jorge Chavez was named on both horses, so it is conceivable one could scratch. Inaugural Address drew the far outside, and would be the most likely of the two to be withdrawn.
Jerry Bailey will ride the John Kimmel-trained Doc Wild, second in the Tyro Stakes at Monmouth last year, and fourth in his only start this year. Edgar Prado has the mount on Tis Magical, who broke his maiden going seven furlongs in his last start for Kathleen O'Connell.
Nokoma ran a big race in the Remsen, getting beaten a neck by Saarland, despite making only his third career start and coming off a maiden victory. Pletcher is hoping the son of Pulpit simply didn't like the deep, tiring track in the Holy Bull. He has since turned in several sharp works, including a 5-furlong drill in :59 3/5 and a bullet 5 furlongs in 1:00 2/5. Regular rider John Velazquez will be aboard.
Monthir has turned in some big efforts, finishing a game second in the one-mile Nashua Stakes at Aqueduct before tiring in the Remsen. He was then beaten a nose by Grey Beard in a 1 1/16-mile allowance, and fell a nose short of Showmeitall in the Hutcheson. He will be ridden by Pat Day.
