Shadwell Keeps Most Euro Stud Fees Unchanged

Shadwell Estate's stallion roster remains largely unchanged from 2013 with the exception of two relocations.

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and Juddmonte International (both group I) winner Sakhee will return home to the Nunnery Stud for 2014 following a season at Yorton Farm in Shropshire. Also moving will be triple group I winner Kutub, who will stand his first season at Girsonfield Stud in Northumberland with Susan Corbett next year after a spell at Batsford Stud.

Further afield, Naaqoos and Muhtathir will both remain at Haras de Mezeray, France. Naaqoos' fee remains unchanged at €4,500 after a promising year with his first crop of 2-year-old runners in the UK and mainland Europe. His stablemate, Muhtathir has seen his fee raised slightly to €7,000 to reflect another outstanding year that included his 2-year-old filly Indonesienne winning the Prix Marcel Boussac (Fr-I) at the Arc meeting in October.

A notable absence from the roster is Shadwell's freshman sire, Aqlaam, who sadly lost his battle against an infection of the guttural pouch during the summer. Richard Lancaster, Shadwell's stud director paid tribute to him as well as highlighting the achievements of Shadwell's flagship stallion Nayef and up-and-coming young sire Mawatheeq.

"The death of Aqlaam was a shattering blow to everyone at Shadwell. It was particularly hard as he was developing a very encouraging profile as a first season sire with a strike rate of around 40% winners from runners. We have three more crops to look forward to from Aqlaam and Shadwell will remain supportive of those breeders who have offspring still to come."

Lancaster said the loss should not overshadow the achievements of the other Shadwell stallions, in particular Nayef, who has sired 66 winners in Europe this season, which have amassed over £1.3million in prize money. His current 3 year old crop has included the group II winner and group I runner up Tasaday; the group II winner Valirann, and the group III winner Sparkling Beam.

"We believe that keeping his fee at £9,000 for 2014 represents a very good investment for breeders looking for a tried and tested quality sire who continues to deliver exceptional results across the board," Lancaster said. "The great achievements of our stallions across the board in 2013 demonstrate that Shadwell's policy of covering limited books of mares and providing a versatile and competitively priced stallion roster for breeders across Europe is a winning one,"
