Tattersalls to Grade, Limit October Yearling Sale

Tattersalls' October yearling sale, which will take place this year Oct. 15-19, will be presented under a new format. The Newmarket, England-based auctioneers will alter the format of the sale by offering the stronger lots on the opening two days and continuing to grade the sale until its conclusion.

Tattersalls has also proposed to limit the number of horses offered at Europe's largest yearling sale to 950, down from last year's record number 1,089.

"The huge foal crops of the last few years have let to record numbers in the October yearling sale which has placed increased strains upon the existing format," said Edmond Mahony, chairman of Tattersalls. "The changes will allow vendors to bring the higher profile lots into park paddocks well before the sale, therefore allowing maximum viewing time for prospective buyers.

"We believe the changes in the October yearling sale will benefit all concerned and we will also be making a small change to the flagship Houghton yearling sale, which will now take place on two days rather that the three days of recent years."

The Houghton yearling sale will be conducted Oct. 2-3.
