Stallions Helmsman and Matty G will be returning to the state of their grade I triumphs for stud duty in 2001. Multiple stakes winners Helmsman and Matty G, both of whom stood in Florida, will stand the 2001 season at Thomas Bachman’s Pegasus Ranch near Petaluma, Calif.

Millionaire Helmsman, who was a champion 2-year-old in Ireland, stood at Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs South near Ocala as the property of the farm. Still owned by Adena Springs, the 8-year-old stallion will stand for $6,000, the same as in 2000. His first foals are yearlings.

Helmsman (El Gran Senor—Sacred Journey, by King’s Bishop) won the Strub Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita and two other graded stakes at that track. His grade I stakes-placings came in the Californian Stakes and Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap, plus the Crown Royal Hollywood Derby on grass. Helmsman entered stud with a record of six wins from 22 starts and earnings of $1,132,142.

Matty G’s big win came in the 1995 Hollywood Futurity (gr. I), and he won the Ascot Handicap (gr. IIIT) the following year on his way to carving out a record of four wins from 19 starts and earnings of $443,275. Seven-year-old Matty G (Capote—Star Gem, by Pia Star) formerly stood at Devonia Stud near Reddick and is a half-brother to millionaire Star of Cozzene. He will stand for a syndicate, and his 2001 fee of $4,000 is the same as what he stood for in 2000. His first foals are yearlings.
