Trainer Bobby Frankel, shown with his Eclipse Award for 2001, has added 3-year-old Medaglia D'Oro to his stable.
Since the injury to Edmund Gann's Labamta Babe, Bobby Frankel has been searching for another 3-year-old colt to possibly bring him and Gann back on the Kentucky Derby trail. Once again it was former trainer Mark Reid who came through for him with his recommendation he buy Medaglia D'Oro, a 4 1/4-length winner of a six-furlong maiden race at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 9. It was Reid who recommended previous Frankel purchases Labamta Babe and You.
Medaglia D'Oro, previously trained by Dave Vance and owned by Joyce Bell, is a son of El Prado, out of a Bailjumper mare. In his only other career start, he was second in a maiden race at Turfway Park in December.
"Got to go along with Mark," Frankel said. "He ran a big race last time out and his numbers are good. We'll bring him to California in the next day or two and start training him. If I can get a couple of more races in him, we should be all right."
In his last start, the 3-5 Medaglia D'Oro, pressed the pace, then drew off in the stretch, stopping the teletimer in a sharp 1:10 4/5. Frankel said he has no particular races in mind for the colt right now.
