Kris, a two-time English champion miler and prominent sire, has been pensioned from stud duty. The 26-year-old stallion was scheduled to cover a limited number of mares in this, his final season at stud, but it became apparent over the weekend that he would be unable to do so.
Kris (Sharpen Up--Doubly Sure, by Reliance II) sired 76 stakes winners, including English champion 3-year-old fillies Oh So Sharp and Unite. A member of Kris' first crop of foals, Oh So Sharp won the 1985 Filly Triple Crown, consisting of the group I One Thousand Guineas, Epsom Oaks, and St. Leger Stakes. Unite, a 3-year-old in 1987, captured the Epsom Oaks and was a champion in Ireland that year by virtue of winning the group I Irish Oaks. Kris' other top runners include French champions Kozana and Common Grounds; additional Irish champions Hawajiss and Hasbah; and North American champion steeplechaser All Gong and Santa Anita grade I winner Single Empire. His daughters have produced some 50 stakes winners.
Bred by the late Lord John Howard de Walden, Kris won 14 of his 16 starts and earned $405,373. He was unbeaten in four starts as a 2-year-old and his resume includes eight group stakes wins.
Kris stood at Howard de Walden's Thornton Stud near Thirsk before moving to the owner's Plantation Stud near Newmarket for the 1995 season.
