Elrose, a half-sister of Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) winner Silver Charm, will make her racing debut Friday at Fair Grounds.

James and Alice Sapara's Elrose is the 7-2 morning-line favorite in the six-furlong maiden race for 3-year-old fillies based in part on her training race victory on Jan. 23. In that race, Elrose trailed early before rallying to victory, completing the five furlongs in 1:03 4/5. Josie Carroll trains Elrose and Robby Albarado will be in the irons.

According to Jockey Club data, Carroll wins at a 14 percent clip with first-time starters. Carroll is 0-3 with such starters this year after winning six of 18 debut races last year.

Elrose was purchased for $700,000 during the 2000 Keeneland September yearling sale. As a yearling, Silver Charm sold for just $16,500 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales August auction.

While Elrose and Silver Charm share a common dam, Elrose's sire also threw two of Silver Charm's rivals from the 1994 crop. Before siring Elrose, Deputy Minister sired Touch Gold, who foiled Silver Charm's Triple Crown run in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), and Awesome Again, who edged the gray/roan colt in the 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I).

Another well-bred daughter of Deputy Minister is also entered in Friday's race. Lassie's Legacy -- a half-sister of A.P. Indy, Summer Squall and Honor Grades – will be making her second start. In her prior start, Lassie's Legacy finished 11th at Belmont Park in a September race in which repeat winner Aly Quatorze finished third. Neil Howard trains the bay filly for owner-breeders W.S. Farish and W.S. Kilroy.
