Highclere Thoroughbred Racing’s Petrushka, winner of the Irish Oaks, assumed the lead with an eighth of a mile to go and defeated Love Divine by 1 1/4 lengths in Wednesday’s Aston Upthorpe Yorkshire Oaks (Eng-I) at York racecourse in England.

The winner, ridden by Johnny Murtagh, was sent off the 5-4 favorite in the six-horse field. Ramruma, seeking to defend her victory in the 1999 Yorkshire Oaks, assumed the early lead while being stalked by last year’s runner-up Ela Athena and Love Divine, winner earlier this year of the Vodafone Oaks at Epsom. Love Divine took the lead with three-eighths of a mile remaining in the 1 1/2 mile test before the winner took over. Love Divine finished two lengths in front of stablemate Ramruma.

According to Sporting Life, the winning daughter of Unfuwain trained by Sir Michael Stoute will make her next start in the Champion Stakes before being sent to Kentucky for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs.
