It did not take long during the Sept. 16 seventh session for the Keeneland September yearling sale to surpass the $219.7 million in gross receipts for the entire 11-day sale in 2012.
Through 12:30 p.m. EDT Monday, Keeneland reported 1,173 horses had been sold for more than $220.8 million for an average price of $188,246 and a median price of $140,000. Last year's sale average was $87,354, with a median of $45,000, for the 2,516 sold.
The 2013 sale, which has been reformatted with the former Books 1 and 2 combined, continues in Lexington through Saturday, Sept. 21.
The top price during the first two hours of the Sept. 16 session was the $230,000 paid by agent Ben Glass for a Mineshaft colt out of the Gone West mare Grandma Martha. Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, the colt consigned as Hip 1759 by Craig and Holly Bandoroff's Denali Stud descends from a female family that includes multiple graded-stakes winners Magicalmysterycat and Nannerl.
