"Horses and Hope," an initiative that works within the equine industry to educate, promote awareness of, and raise funds for detection and treatment of breast cancer, has two upcoming events.
On Sept. 7, Kentucky Downs in Franklin, Ky., will have a "Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the Races," with retired jockey Patricia Cooksey and Mary Midkiff, a horse trainer, author, and equine therapist. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. CDT and includes a lunch buffet followed by a race named for Horses and Hope and a program at 2 p.m.
On Sept. 14 first lady Jane Beshear will host a Horses and Hope trail ride at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. More than 10 miles of marked trails and open fields at the facility will be available for the ride, with participants able to take a guided ride or ride on their own.
There will also be a barbecue picnic in conjunction with the ride.
Registration before Sept. 7 costs $65; after Sept. 7 or on site the cost is $75 (cash or check). Cost to attend the picnic only is $25.
