Medication, Equine Health on Symposium Agenda

A panel discussion on medication use and regulations in the pari-mutuel industry will be part of an equine medical symposium hosted by the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine March 14-15 in Hollywood Beach, Fla.

The symposium will focus on equine health. Topics include respiratory diseases, gastric ulceration, neurological diseases, performance evaluation, upper airway surgery, equine disease outbreaks, and catastrophic injuries. There also will be an update on West Nile virus, which hit areas of Florida hard last year.

Jim Gallagher, executive director of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Racing Integrity and Drug Testing Task Force, said he is one of the panelists for the medication session. Other participants are Jeff Noe, a steward, and Drs. Tom Brokken, Mark Cheney, Mary Scollay, and Ian Tebbett.

In a related matter, Gallagher said the second round of results from the NTRA task force's "super-testing" program could be available by the end of February. In addition, participants in the Racehorse Medication Summit held in December are expected to meet again soon to plot a course of action in regard to a uniform medication and testing policy for the industry.
