A filly by Encosta de Lago brought the top price of $140,000 (approximately $71,456 in U.S. funds) during the first session of the San Miguel premier yearling sale in Australia Sunday. William Inglis and Son, which conducts the auction, purchased her for a client of trainer Bart Cummings' stable. Produced from the winning Bellotto mare Lottey, the filly is a full-sister to Gold Lottey, who had won the VRC Vanity Stakes (Aus-III) on Saturday.
The top-priced colt was a son of Rubiton, who sold for $130,000 ($66,352) to trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith. The colt was consigned to the auction by Rubiton Bloodstock. He is a full brother to Australian group III winner Millrich.
"He's a real Rubiton type from a great winning family," Mayfield-Smith said. "We've had so much success with the Rubiton stock of late, and I've had so many inquiries. I don't think I'll have any problem finding owners for him."
In all, 75 yearlings were sold for a gross of $2,702,500 ($1,379,356) and an average price of $36,033 ($18,391).
