Golfers and horsemen will support the Winners Foundation and the California Racetrack Chaplaincy Outreach, two organizations that help people in the racing industry, by participation in the Aug. 12 Del Mar Charity Classic Golf Tournament. The tournament will be held at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club, located just a couple of miles from Del Mar racetrack.
The Winners Foundation aids anyone in the racing industry and family members who need help with substance abuse. It has played a huge role in successfully returning many to their jobs, as well as counseling them during their road to recovery. The Winners Foundation also refers people to a variety of treatment programs.
The California Racetrack Chaplaincy Outreach tends to the spiritual needs of backstretch workers. It also helps the industry in a variety of ways, including aid in applying for citizenship, filing taxes, and by holding clothing drives and organizing food banks.
Joe Harper of Del Mar and jockeys Garrett Gomez and David Flores will chair the event, which begins with registration at 10 a.m. and a noon shotgun start.
Cocktails and a silent auction are slated for 5 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. dinner and awards.
