Stronach Stable's Thunder Blitz worked three furlongs at Gulfstream Park Friday morning, a day before stablemate Red Bullet goes to post in the Donn Handicap (gr. I). Thunder Blitz was timed in :38 4 /5 seconds for the breeze over the fast track for trainer Joe Orseno.
Thunder Blitz won last year's Flamingo Stakes (gr. III) at Hialeah Park, then finished fourth in both the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Belmont Stakes (gr. I) in his next two starts. The now 4-year-old son of Holy Bull completed his sophomore season with a pair of third-place finishes in the Long Branch Breeders' Cup Stakes and West Virginia Derby.
In a depleted older handicap division, Stronach Stable holds a relatively strong hand, with Red Bullet, Macho Uno, and Thunder Blitz in South Florida with Orseno and Bobby Frankel-trained Euchre, who has finished second in three consecutive graded races at Southern California tracks. Thunder Blitz, with just two wins from 12 career starts, remains eligible for a "non-winners of two other than" allowance race.
Also working three furlongs at Gulfstream Park Friday was the $1-million purchase Warners, who was clocked in :37 2/5.
A $50,000 purchase at the Keeneland 2000 September yearling sale, Warners subsequently sold to Eugene Melnyk for $1,050,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales 2-year-old sale the following March. Warners started twice as a juvenile, finishing second at Belmont Park in June, then winning at Saratoga in September for trainer Todd Pletcher.
