The board of directors of Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Center located near Georgetown, Ky., announced July 30 the election of Dr. Steven Allday to the organization's board.

Founded by former film critic Michael Blowen in 2002, the Old Friends retirement facility now cares for more than 120 retired equine athletes, with farms in Georgetown, Ky., and Greenfield Center, N.Y.

"Dr. Allday has already been a valuable contributor to the health and welfare of our horses, and I know he will be a tremendous asset to the board," said Blowen.

Allday has specialized in equine sports medicine with a focus on Thoroughbreds for more than 25 years. He has treated such luminaries of the turf as 1992 Horse of the Year A.P. Indy, two-time Horse of the Year Cigar (1995-96), 1997 Horse of the Year Favorite Trick, as well as winners of 13 Triple Crown races and 29 Breeders' Cup races. His expertise has been in demand across the country, from Betfair Hollywood Park to Belmont Park, and across the pond in Newmarket and at the Curragh.

In addition to his veterinary practice Allday is also an entrepreneur in the industry of natural equine health care. He is the founder and CEO of Halstrum, makers of the equine joint-care supplements LubriSyn and LubriSyn CA, and of Re-Borne, makers of Re-Borne, a unique formulation of bovine colostrums that is a natural alternative to antibiotics, steroids, and hormones in both equines and bovines.

Allday has even transferred his equine skills into the saddle, becoming a prominent figure in one of the nation's fastest-growing equine sports: team roping.

"I am so excited to be a member of the Old Friends team," said Allday in a release. "The continuous care of Thoroughbreds beyond their racing and breeding careers is imperative to the industry and I am looking forward to upholding its mission."
