Fastnet Rock Weanling Tops at Magic Millions
A Fastnet Rock colt sold for the overall highest price of Aus$290,000 (US$280,788) on the second and final day of the Magic Millions National weanling sale May 28 on the Gold Coast.
Hong Kong-based businessman Cheng Ting Kong, an emerging international player, teamed with leading dual state breeding operation Eliza Park to secure the colt, who was offered by Erinvale Thoroughbreds, agent.
The bay colt is the second foal out of the winning Stravinsky colt Sorority Girl, a half sister to multiple group winner and sire Happy Giggle and stakes-placed Happy Spring.
Coolmore sire Fastnet Rock is currently ranked second on Australia’s general sire list.
The partnership made eight purchases in the name of Sun Kingdom/Eliza (Hong Kong) for Aus$935,000 (US$905,299). Originally, the Sun Kingdom/Eliza team was looking to buy some quality weanlings to sell but now may race.
The strength of the two-day sale was reflected by an 87% clearance rate as 237 horses sold for total receipts of Aus$8,541,950 (US$8,270,611), a 1.7% increase from last year’s sale. The average price of Aus$36,042 (US$34,897) was up 4.7%.
"When you're selling the best part of nine from each 10 lots through the ring it tells us it's been a fantastic sale," Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said. "To see good participation from all corners of the globe is very rewarding and reflects well on the Australian bloodstock industry."
A filly by Darley shuttler Street Cry sold on day one for the sale’s second-highest price of Aus$280,000 (US$271,106).
Bought by bloodstock agent Bill Mitchell on behalf of Segenhoe Thoroughbreds, the bay filly is the second foal out of the winning Lonhro mare Munhro, a half sister to group III winner Colour from the family of multiple group I winner and successful sire Snippets. She was consigned by Sledmere Stud, agent.
"She's a really lovely individual and looks a great prospect," Mitchell said after purchasing the youngster. "We've very happy to be able to buy her from her breeder Michael Sissian."
The Magic Millions National sale continues May 29 with the first day of a three-day broodmare session.
