Trainer Justin R. Evans scored his 1,000th career win May 26 when Celestic Night won the fifth race at Lone Star Park.
According to figures from Equibase, Evans had 998 wins going into the day, with five entered at Lone Star and five entered at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. The trainer increased his total to 999 by winning the first race at Ruidoso, and then reached the milestone at Lone Star.
Celestic Night, ridden by Gerardo Mora for owners T & T Roofing, rallied to win the starter allowance by a neck, paying $14.20.
A native of California, Evans began his training career under his father, Robert Evans, at Turf Paradise in Arizona. Last year, Evans won training titles at SunRay Park, Albuquerque Downs, and Zia Park, all in New Mexico, according to the weekly newspaper El Paso Inc.
