Beat Hollow, making his U.S. debut after a 19-month layoff, beat Little Ghazi by a length Thursday in the $61,000 feature race at Santa Anita. Ridden by Alex Solis, Beat Hollow ran 1 1/8 miles on the firm turf course in 1:47.15 and paid $3, $2.20, and $2.10.
The 5-year-old British-bred son of Sadler's Wells earned $36,600 for his fourth victory in five career starts to raise his lifetime total to $418,971. As a 3-year-old, the Juddmonte Farms homebred won the Grand Prix de Paris (Fr-I) and Green Ridge Stables Newmarket Stakes. Beat Hollow's only career defeat came in the Vodafone Epsom Derby (Eng-I), in which he finished third, behind only Sinndar and Sakhee. For his efforts in the about 1 1/4-mile Grand Prix de Paris, Beat Hollow was named the highweighted 3-year-old on the French Free Handicap for distances between 1 3/16 and 1 3/8 miles. He is now trained by Bobby Frankel.
Frankel indicated the $700,000 Explosive Bid Handicap at 1 1/8 miles on the turf at the Fair Grounds on March 24 likely will be the next start for Beat Hollow.
Little Ghazi returned $2.80 and $2.10, and Lily's Lad paid $2.10 to show. Sign of Hope, Green Jaro, and Res Judicata completed the order of finish.
