Hip 92, a colt by Into Mischief out of the Danzig mare Smolensk, brought a final bid of $320,000.

A colt by hot sire Into Mischief   out of the Danzig mare Smolensk brought a final bid of $320,000 from trainer Bob Baffert to top the early portion of the Barretts May sale May 13 in Pomona, Calif. The price tops the $300,000 sale topper from last year's May sale.

Baffert didn't disclose the buyer. Richard and Connie Snyder of New Mexico were the consignors of the colt through Ciaran Dunne.

The colt was bred in Kentucky by Malibu Farms. Consigned to the 2011 Keeneland November breeding stock sale by Spendthrift Farm through Warrendale Sales, the colt was purchased for $40,000 by Gus Bell, agent. Consigned to the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale the following year, he RNA'd for $60,000. He was withdrawn from the Fasig-Tipton Florida juvenile sale earlier this year through Dunne's Wavertree Stables, agent.

Smolensk, a group II winner in France, is out Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Blush With Pride and a half sister to 2007 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour, the dam of Rags to Riches and Jazil, back-to-back winners of the Belmont Stakes (gr. I).

Earlier in the sale, a son of Tale of the Cat   sold for $300,000. Bloodstock agent Gayle Van Leer bought the youngster for Rustin and Juliana Kretz from the consignment of Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds.

The Tale of the Cat youngster was one of 11 to breeze a furlong in :10, the fastest time at the distance at the May 10 under-tack preview. Out of the Danehill mare La Danielle, the colt is from the family of English Broodmare of the Year Hasili.

"The sales have been so strong, so I wasn't surprised at the price," Van Leer said. "This colt is smart. He did his breezes both here and at the Florida sale really easily."

The colt, bred in Kentucky by Andres Bezzola, was $75,000 sale weanling at Keeneland November, purchased by McMahon and Hill from the consignment of Beau Lane Bloodstock, agent. DWF bought him as a yearling for $145,000 out of the sixth session of last year's Keeneland September yearling sale by Hidden Brook, agent for Spruce Lane Farm. The colt then RNA'd for $290,000 earlier this year at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s March sale from the consignment of Hartley/De Renzo.

Van Leer said Ron Ellis will train the colt for the Kretzes.

"The Kretzes are the kind of people we need in this business," Van Leer said.

The Barretts May sale began at 3 p.m. (PDT). A full wrap-up of the sale will be available later at bloodhorse.com.
