Live pedigrees and Kentucky sire power highlight the Barretts May 2-year-old sale. Coming off a March sale that jumped more than 30% in average, Barretts offers a catalog of 142 juveniles plus a catalog supplement of another 13 for the May 13 sale in Pomona, Calif.
Becky Thomas' Sequel Bloodstock has the only sale horse by Malibu Moon, the sire of Orb, who won the May 4 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Hip 32 is a colt out of graded-stakes winner Jill Robin L., also the dam of stakes-placed Capitol Appeal. The youngster sold for $200,000 as a yearling at Saratoga.
Horse of the Year Invasor has a half brother in the sale. Another from the Sequel consignment, the colt, Hip 72, is by Street Cry (IRE) out of Quendom, a full sister to Argentine group I winner Reina Victoriosa.
Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts Equine Limited, hopes for a strong sale, building upon the success in March and the increases at 2-year-old auctions in Florida and Kentucky.
"The demand has been up all year," he said. "People are still looking for horses. The sales have been strong from our March sale all the way through, which shows good health and energy in the market. We expect it to continue all the way into the yearling season."
Several nationally ranked sires have horses in the May sale, including Tapit, Tale of the Cat, City Zip, Macho Uno, Henny Hughes, Indian Charlie, and Candy Ride. In addition, several stallions whose first foals are 2-year-olds will be represented, including Zensational, Papa Clem, Cowboy Cal, and Dixie Chatter . Papa Clem and Dixie Chatter won graded stakes in California and are standing in the state.
One of the Dixie Chatter youngsters clocked the fastest quarter-mile, :21 flat, at the May 10 under tack preview. Named Sizzlin' Dixie and consigned by Andy Havens' Havens Bloodstock Agency Inc. as Hip 93, she is out of the stakes-winning Desert God mare Sonora Desert.
Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds have one of the Zensational offerings, a colt that brought $175,000 as a yearling at Keeneland and went through this year's Barretts March sale as a $240,000 buy-back. Consigned to the May sale as Hip 132, the youngster is a half brother to graded-stakes winner Publication.
The same consignment also has the only Tale of the Cat in the sale, Hip 41. Out of the Danehill mare La Danielle, the colt was one of 11 horses to preview a furlong in :10 flat, the fastest time at that distance.
The others to preview in :10 included Rocket Ridge from Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables Inc. consignment. The colt, Hip 65, is by Not for Love–Polo Ridge, by Wild Rush.
Two fillies in the catalog have already started. Callaway Thoroughbreds offers Hip 112, now named Pleasant Miss, who won at Betfair Hollywood Park May 9 in her racing debut. She is a daughter of Pleasantly Perfect–Winter Tide, by Tale of the Cat. Red Rock Training Stables has consigned Ninnavee, who finished second May 3 and third April 25 at Hollywood. The filly, Hip 51, is by Suave–Maud, by Holy Bull.
The sale, which will begin at 3 p.m. PDT, will be streamed live at http://www.bloodhorse.com/barretts.
