The May 4 telecast of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) on NBC registered a 10.4 overnight rating and 23 share for the race portion, according to The Nielsen Company, a viewership increase of 16% from 2012.

In a May 5 release, NBC Sports said the 10.4 overnight rating for the 6-7 p.m. EDT race portion equaled the 2010 rating as the best in 21 years.

Pre-race coverage from Churchill Downs on NBC from 5-6 p.m. drew a 6.2 rating and 15 share, up 15% from last year, the network reported. Coverage from 4-4:30 p.m. received a 3.1 rating and 8 share, the highest since coverage during that time period began in 2008; coverage from 4:30-5 p.m. registered a 4.1 rating and 10 share, the best since coverage during that period began in 2007.

The top three metered markets for the Derby broadcast were Louisville, Ky., which hosts the race (43.7 overnight rating and 69 share); Fort Myers, Fla. (19.7 and 37); and Cincinnati, Ohio (18.8 and 37).

NBC will broadcast the May 18 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) from Pimlico Race Course in Maryland. Related coverage will begin May 15 on the NBC Sports Network.
