Maryland Million Set for Oct. 19 at Laurel

The Maryland Million will have its 28th renewal at Laurel Park Oct. 19, with purses and awards of more than $1 million for Maryland-sired horses.

Now named the "Jim McKay Maryland Million Day" in honor of the late sportscaster who conceived the Maryland Million, the event is known as "Maryland's Day At the Races."

"Jim McKay Maryland Million Day is the highlight of the fall meet in Maryland. It is the time we celebrate Maryland's Thoroughbred industry, and we have lots to look forward to," said Cricket Goodall, Maryland Million Ltd. executive director, in a release. "The industry is already feeling the benefits of increased revenue and a secure future."

McKay envisioned a day of racing showcasing Maryland's Thoroughbred industry after attending the inaugural Breeders' Cup in 1984.
