Gary and Mary West's Flashback, second in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), came out of the race with a small chip in his right knee and will be sent to Rood & Riddle April 10 to have the chip removed, trainer Bob Baffert said April 7.
Flashback was the even-money favorite in the Santa Anita Derby, but was unable to catch the 6-1 Goldencents, who scored by 1 1/4 lengths.
"He's going to be fine," Baffert said. "He took a little bobble in the stretch when he turned for home and switched leads and didn't go on after that. So maybe he did it then. This morning he was fine, but he had some heat in the knee, so we took an X-ray and found the fresh chip in there. Dr. (Larry) Bramlage of Rood & Riddle recommended we take it out and said he should make a full recovery with the surgery and time off."
Flashback, a son of Tapit —Rhumb Line, by Mr. Greeley, has two victories and two seconds in four career starts, including a 6 1/4-length romp in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II).
