Sr. Quisqueyano leaves them behind in the Calder Derby.

Sr. Quisqueyano was strong in the stretch, pulling away to a 7 1/2-length victory over odds-on favorite Speak Logistics in the $250,000 Calder Derby April 6. The 3-year-old son of Exclusive Quality   covered nine furlongs at Calder Casino & Race Course in 1:52.71 (VIDEO).

With Carlos Olivero up, Sr. Quisqueyano was challenged through early splits of :23.76, :48.43, and 1:13.16 while stalked by Speak Logistics, then pulled away from that rival in the lane, opening up a fourth-length lead at the eighth pole after a mile in 1:38.98.

Speak Logistics held second, four lengths to the good of Reporting Star. Joshua's Comprise, Sky Captain, Michael With Us, Elmutahid, and Offlee Fast completed the field.

The winner, owned by Rosa Stephany Taveras and trained by Luis Olivares, was bred in Florida by Do-Little Farm and is out of the Polish Navy mare Royal Navy. The bay colt has now earned two stakes wins from 10 starts, having landed the $73,800 Sea Cliff Stakes last August at Calder. He has a 4-4-0 slate and has earned $319,950 with the $150,350 payday.

Second to Itsmyluckyday Jan. 1 in the Gulfstream Derby, Sr. Quisqueyano was unplaced in both the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) and Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) this spring.

The winner paid $10.80, $4.40, and $3.40. Speak Logistics paid $2.60 and $2.10 while Reporting Star paid $5.60 to show. The $2 exacta (1-4) paid $24.60 and the 1-4-3 trifecta brought back $177.
