Jockey Joy Scott is in satisfactory condition March 29 following surgery a day earlier at Huntington Memorial Hospital to repair a compound fracture of her right femur, according to her son, Jesse Sanchez.

"They put the rod in and she's in great spirits," Sanchez reported. "They will be monitoring her healing and response to the operation very closely for the next two, three days in the hospital before they say much about her prognosis. The doctor made it clear that it is still very much one day at a time, but this is a step forward. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers."

Scott, 53, was injured in a training accident March 12 at Santa Anita Park when a horse she was going to work reared and threw her. An infection in the injured leg, the same one she broke in a five-horse accident at Los Alamitos in 2001, delayed the surgery until March 28.

Trainer Howard Zucker is spearheading a fund-raising drive for the popular Scott, as is the Winners Foundation at Santa Anita. Donations also may be made at Santa Anita’s racing department.

Scott had won five times from 63 mounts this year at Santa Anita and Los Alamitos. Last year, she won 11 times in 175 mounts, her runners earning $211,325. During her career, which began in 1981, Scott has won 466 races from 6,600 starts.
