Veterinarians monitoring the recovery of classic winner Rachel Alexandra at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington reported the abscess drained March 7 continues to respond well to treatment.
Rood & Riddle staff noted the 2009 Horse of the Year displayed a strong appetite and an increase in "feisty" behavior during her walks last week.
Rachel Alexandra entered Rood & Riddle in mid-Feburary after the 2009 Blackberry Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner suffered a damaged section of colon following the Feb. 12 birth of a Bernardini filly. At Rood & Riddle, Rachel Alexandra underwent abdominal surgery to remove the damaged section of colon.
