Three fillies—Hip Nos. 93, 148, and 164—sizzled an eighth of a mile in :09 4/5 March 7 to highlight the first of two under tack previews for the Ocala Breeders' Sale Co.'s March selected sale of 2-year-olds in training March 12-13 in Ocala.
Hip No. 93, a Kentucky-bred filly by Colonel John out of the unraced Storm Cat mare Storm Key, is consigned by Day Vista Farms, agent for Fifty Shades of Hay Racing. The half sister to grade I stakes-placed runner Desert Key is from the female family of Apple Blossom H. (gr. I) winner Nine Keys.
"We breezed her last week and when she changed leads, she was gone," said Tim Mawhinney of Day Vista Farms. "Today, the rider just tapped her on the shoulder and she took off. Not only does she look the part, but she has a great mind. She's a smart filly."
Hip No. 148, a daughter of Pioneerof the Nile produced from the stakes-winning Forest Wildcat mare Wild Catseye, is consigned by Sequel Bloodstock (Becky Thomas), agent. The Kentucky-bred filly is a half sister to three winners.
From the first crop of Old Fashioned , hip No. 164, is consigned by Niall Brennan, agent. Bred in Kentucky, the filly is produced from the stakes-placed Forestry mare Angel Island, who finished second in the 2006 Monmouth Park NATC Futurity. The filly's second dam is stakes winner and multiple stakes-placed Sweeping, by End Sweep.
"She's fast. She tipped her hand when we worked her over the surface last week," said Brennan. "She prepped very nicely over the track, so we expected her to breeze well. She's fast but she's not built like a Quarter Horse. She has scope. She's a nice, pretty filly but with a lot of length. She's a natural runner."
The fastest quarter was recorded by Hip No. 58, a colt by Henny Hughes —Sea Gift, by A.P. Indy, who sped the distance in :20 3/5. Consigned by Southern Chase Farm (Greg and Karen Dodd), agent, the chestnut colt is from the family of graded stakes winner Ocean Queen.
Two horses worked quarters in :21 2/5—Hip No. 133, a colt by Into Mischief out of the Value Plus mare Value Vetted consigned by Southern Chase Farm Inc., agent, and Hip No. 163, a Yes It's True colt out of the Storm Bird mare Andrea Gail named Yesiamtalkintoyou. Consigned by Craig L. Wheeler, agent, Yesiamtalkintoyou is a half-brother to graded stakes winner Areyoutalkintome.
