Arlington Park and horsemen were working Feb. 22 toward a resolution over a flap involving possible stall rental charges at the suburban Chicago race track, according to sources close to the situation.
A provision included in Arlington's 2013 stabling application said that a "stall rent may be imposed" on "trainers that do not average one start per stall or on a horse which runs at another racetrack" when it could have run at Arlington.
Arlington said the provision is intended to ensure horses it stables actually run at Arlington and contribute toward field size. Officials of the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association said the provision would be a bludgeon that track officials could use to hold horsemen to account on other issues.
After a war of newsletters and mass e-mails, peppered with appeals to the Illinois Racing Board, Arlington and the ITHA Friday were working on alternate language.
