Australian Sale's Results Fall Short Of Last Year's Record Pace

The Classic yearling sale in Australia ended on Tuesday with gross revenues of $9,958,000 ($5,392,257) for the 342 yearlings sold during two sessions. The average price was $29,117 ($15,767). While the statistics fell short of last year's record-breaking figures, the sale still ranked as the second most successful summer yearling sale ever held at Newmarket.

"When you consider how far this sale has come, in just a short space of time, it's really been a great result, said Reg Inglis, managing director of William Inglis & Son. "Five years ago the average price was just $14,660 and now we've got quality horses selling for up to $180,000."

Woodlands Stud, as agent for Christian Marin, sold the top-priced lot Tuesday, a powerful-looking bay colt by End Sweep--Marcia, by Marscay. Steve Brem, acting for Gai Waterhouse, finally won the colt with a bid of $120,000 ($64,980). The underbidders included Ron Dufficy and Keiran Moore.

John Rippon's Reavill Farm sold a Snippets colt out of Laffy (USA). Victorian bloodstock agent Mark Pilkington secured the colt for $105,000 ($56,858), and he is destined to join the team at Lindsay Park.

"We bought his full brother last year and his half-sister Latte, the year before that," said Pilkington. "Maybe we should just buy the mare!"
